Department of Anatomy - New Delhi

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi was established in 1956 with a triple mandate to lead the country in the fields of medical education, training and research, and patient care. The department of Anatomy was one of the first departments to be set up. This department has contributed to the development of the curriculum in anatomy, which has been implemented all over our country by the Medical Council of India. Research and publications from this department has been often quoted in the bible of anatomy- Gray’s Textbook of Anatomy.

The department today is involved in medical teaching and training at the undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels and also providesservices that include diagnostics in genetic disorders and fluorosis. It also runs a National Centre for Electron microscopy that also regularly provides training for technicians and investigators. The department is a WHO-recognized Centre for training in Human Genetics.The department is also an active collaborator and organizer of various cadaveric workshops for post-graduate training and skills training in surgical and allied disciplines.

The main thrust areas for research in the department are neurobiology, male and female infertility, auditory and visual pathways, ageing-related disorders, pain biology, addiction genetics, pre-ecclampsia, enteric nervous system, pancreatitic pathogenesis, morphometry using state-of-the-art design-based stereology, autophagy and cell death, rare and common genetic disorders, toxicology of arsenic, breast cancer, nanobiology and drug-delivery systems, plastination and cancer biology including rare endocrine tumours. The research is conducted on patient and other human material, animal models and cell lines (both primary and immortalized). The Central Animal Facility at AIIMS provides adequate support for research using experimental mammalian models.

This department leads the country in education, anatomical sciences and would like to continue to do so. It is constantly striving to better itself and creates opportunities to provide training and support to all anatomists in this country and SAARC nations.
