Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum is the oldest museum in Mumbai. Situated in the vicinity of Byculla Zoo, Byculla East, it was originally established in 1855 as a treasure house of the decorative and industrial arts, and was later renamed in honour of Dr. Bhau Daji Lad. The construction of the present building in Jijamata Udyan in Byculla started in 1862 and was completed in 1871. The museum was opened on 2 May 1872 as The Victoria and Albert Museum, Bombay. A little more than a hundred years later, on 1 November 1975, the Museum was renamed the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum in honour of the man whose vision and dedication enabled its establishment. Dr. Bhau Daji Lad was the first Indian Sheriff of Mumbai, a philanthropist, historian, physician, surgeon and secretary of the Museum Committee when it was first instituted. The Museum is managed by a public-private partnership, a first for a cultural institution in India. The partnership involves the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai, the Jamnalal Bajaj Foundation and the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH). Great Place to visit in Mumbai, where you can see Historical things about Mumbai, History of India & many more things to explore....

I've been staying in Mumbai for 20+ years! But never seen anything like this! Lovely museum. It gives amazing perspective on the history of India. Hundreds of artefacts and their descriptions give you a glimpse of how India was during the British Era and before that. Artistic creations depicting the villages, the people, the sports and the livelihoods of Indian people of those times are an absolute delight to the eye. The museum also pays tribute to some of the greatest Indian minds who contributed in the preservation of Indian history and culture. A visit to this museum is a true lesson in history. Highly recommended, not to be missed at all!

The museum had some amazing collections of past history including ancient games of India, Metals and Utensils used in early period. Vintage painting and history of people who settled early in Bombay when it was just an island. It also has a huge Elephant statue outside which was found in Elephanta island which the Britishers tried to take to UK but it was broken while in transit so fixed it and kept it outside the museum for display.

Hidden monument in Mumbai and something everyone should visit. The cost of ticket is Rs. 10 per person. The interiors are just amazing. You get to see the history of this place and everything is just perfect. The place is well lit and you can view history of Mumbai way back to 150 years. This will definitely be of interest for historians. The cafe is also good and reasonably priced. A must place to visit if u are near Byculla Zoo. Super place and most recommended place in 2022.
