Only an outsider will hesitate to enquire about the location of 'Gandu Bagicha'. For the local person, it is just like any other name. Yesterday it was not hot in South Mumbai. But the encroached footpaths, congested roads, and continuous traffic tire you the most. Durgadevi Udyan is how the Mumbai Municipal Corporation has registered the park's name in its official record. It is an 18-minute walk from Grant Road, Mumbai Central, and Sandhurst Road stations. It lies in between the Central and Western rail routes. In 1986 the legendary poet Namdev Dhasal published his poetry collection 'Gandu Bagicha'. I presumed the poet keeping in sync with his writing style might have given such an offensive title to his book. There was no chance that a park with such a name would ever exist. Fifteen years before the park was revamped. Earlier it was divided into kids, women, men, and a common section with a rectangular playground on the one side. And a study hall between the garden and the ground. Now the women's and men's sections are merged into the common section. One big chunk of the garden was used to construct a water tank. There is a regular gym, an open gym, and lots of green space in the garden. Every day a dozen of Eastern Cattle Egret birds (बगळा ) visit the garden in the morning time and leaves the garden just before sunset. The kid's section has two swings and half a dozen play installations. Between the kids' section and the study hall, there is an empty fountain with blue tiles. And a brown-colored statue of a woman in traditional Marathi attire. It's a statue of Bal Gandharv, a popular Marathi theater actor who was a singer and enacted female characters in the plays about a century ago.
