Lokmanya Tilak Memorial Statue was erected at the very spot where he was cremated a century ago in 1920, near Girgaum Chowpatty beach. As a tribute to Lokmanya Tilak(1856-1920), 13 years after his death, a towering statue sculpted by the eminent sculptor Raghunath Phadke was unveiled. A large iron box with his earthy possessions of pagadi, clothes, shoes, copy of the Gita rahasya & his biography by N C Kelkar were buried 30 ft below the memorial. Born as Bal Gangadhar Tilak, he was so loved by the people that he was given the title of Lokmanya. Tilak is best remembered for his fight for Swaraj or self-rule & his slogan 'Swaraj is my birthright and I shall have it.' Tilak organised public celebrations like Ganeshotsav in 1893 & Shivaji Jayanti in 1895 to mobilize people for the freedom movement. He started awakening people through his fiery articles in Marathi newspaper Kesari & its English paper Mahratta. British called him the Father of the Indian unrest & arrested him on charges of sedition in 1908. Tilak’s inspiring words are inscribed in golden letters on a marble plaque at Bombay High Court, where he was tried for the sedition charges. He was not just a fierce freedom fighter, but also an economist, journalist, lawyer, social reformer & a scholar of astronomy, Indian history, Sanskrit. He founded Deccan Education Society, which still runs Fergusson College in Pune. Tilak fell ill with malaria & breathed his last in 1920. His last words were, 'Unless Swaraj is achieved, India will not prosper. It is vital for our existence' More than 2 lakh people attended the funeral, largest ever in Indian history. As the turnout was huge, the cremation was done at Chowpatty beach. Tilak was cremated in the padmasana position on a sandalwood pyre, a distinction given only to saints.
