★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Fort George was an extension to the fortified walls of Bombay (now Mumbai) built in 1769; it was in the present-day Fort area, to the east of the site of the former Dongri Fort. The hill on which the Dongri fort stood was razed, and in its place Fort George was built. In 1862, the fort was demolished.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The East India Company (EIC), which had entered India around 1600 for trading activities, had begun licensed trading at Surat, which was its initial bastion. However, to secure its trade lines and commercial interests in the spice trade, it felt the necessity of a port closer to the Malaccan Straits, and succeeded in purchasing a piece of coastal land, originally called Chennirayarpattinam or Channapatnam, where the Company began the construction of a harbour and a fort. The fort was completed on 23 April 1644 at a cost of £3,000,[6] coinciding with St George's Day, celebrated in honour of the patron saint of England. The fort, hence christened Fort St George, faced the sea and some fishing villages, and it soon became the hub of merchant activity. It gave birth to a new settlement area called George Town (historically referred to as Black Town), which grew to envelop the villages and led to the formation of the city of Madras. It also helped to establish English influence over the Carnatic and to keep the kings of Arcot and Srirangapatna, as well as the French forces based at Pondichéry, at bay.

About St. George Fort
St. George Fort or Fort George is a ruined fort situated in the Fort area of Mumbai. Built in 1769, the fort was named after King George III. The Fort is a noted structure of the early years of British Empire in India. If you're a lover of history and historical anecdotes, you'll particularly enjoy this place. According to legend, this fort was constructed to provide defence against the attacks by Napoleon and later was also used as a storehouse for British arms and ammunitions. Later, the fort was destroyed by Sir Barter Fier, as the Army no longer required it. Although you will only be able to see the ruins of the fortification today, it'll stir up a nostalgia in you and leave you lurking to dig deeper into our country's history.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Fort is a busy commercial district with colonial-era offices, chain stores and street stalls selling everything from coconut water to used books. The Asiatic Society Library, in the Greek-influenced 1830 Town Hall, contains the original 15th-century manuscript of Dante’s “Divine Comedy” and overlooks Horniman Circle Gardens.
