The Grand Canyon of India a must visit!! Though it's a walk on the boulders n rocks so wear good shoes, cover up yourself and wear a lot of sunscreen. Gorgeous Rocky terrain with the river front. We visited it in the afternoon as there was less crowd. During sunset it will be over crowded. A night stay is recommended so that you can rest n enjoy the place. We stayed at Freakouts but it was over crowded for a Saturday about 350 extra tents. If you want to really enjoy the place go on a weekday. Food is only Andra Food n some food stalls selling maggi n omlette. Haritha is the only restaurant style place but limited options of Andra food available. Bathrooms are not clean, so manage it. We stayed in Swiss tents in Freakouts so we had a personal washroom n a tent room. Recommend that but it's expensive!

One should not miss the sunrise at this canyon. That was a best experience had there. The canyon was formed by Penna river makes you feel so fresh and had the beautiful landscape. Be careful while hiking as the rocks are bit slippery and avoid going to the edges. Along with this you can get to view the Gandikota fort which is adjacent to the canyon for the architectural brilliance.

Gandikota Camping- what it is and what it is not As I walked to the river view point inside the ruins of the Gandikota fort, the evening sun lit up the canyon in gold. I realized that I was not prepared for the enormity of the canyon. It’s a must see place. Sitting there, looking at it, in the sun and the cool breeze, is an opportunity to ground oneself. Now about some tips that might help for overall planning. 1. It take almost same time from Hyderabad or Bangalore by road. As of Dec 2021, the road from Bangalore is 80% decent and the rest patchy. The route I took went from Bangalore - Kadri - Pulivendula - Gandikota. Thanks Google maps 2. Best to reach by early evening, camp over night and return or move on after breakfast. 3. On arrival, visit the fort. Inside the fort there are ruins of two temples, fort in general, masjid, Granary, river and Canyon view point. There are boards that shows the directions inside the fort. 4. As you reach the fort, the vehicles can either be parked out side or driven to parking place inside the fort. If you park outside there is easily a 500 m walk in to the fort. Inside the fort there is a whole village where people still live. If you chose to drive inside, you will have to go through stone laid village road. It’s a narrow single lane road for going in and coming out. Road is big enough to take even larger SUVs but not anything larger than that. If you run in to another vehicle on that road, it could become a bit tricky. But plenty of people take their vehicles all the way in to the fort. 5. After visiting the fort. The road towards camping site is the one that goes to right as you stand facing the fort. There are sufficient boards for camping right there and shouldn’t be confusing at all. Even otherwise, local people are extremely helpful- feel free to ask. 6. About camping operators: there are many. All camps are adjacent or colocated. There are probably 500 makeshift tents like the ones in the pictures. All of them are right at the cliff. Among the camping operators- β€œFreakout Adventures” alone has permanent tents as well. Freakout also has a perimeters for their camp which could give a sense of security where as others are just outdoor camping. 7. Safety first: the place appeared safe - men, women, families and children. 8. Challenge: Only Freakout has permanent tents that has attached bathrooms. Other campers have shared bathrooms which are at least 500 mts away from the camping site. This could be a problem for few. If you have to go to bathroom, you have to pick a vehicle and go. 9. Food: food options are very basic. Not the place you go for β€œfood”. 10. The operators arrange a campfire at sight - mostly in the package. 11. Unless you have asked specifically to come along, operators would just guide you in the direction of other sightseeing spots like water fall. They may not come along. I personally found it challenging to walk a KM through the forest to the water falls unguided - and not recommended- not for security reasons , but one could get lost. Airtel reception was poor. Would recommend that this is clearly spoken and agreed while booking. Operators have a tendency to say yes as if it’s in the package. What’s in the package is usually the camping and food - and not the guided tour. 12. How to get there: I rode a motorcycle. Riding up and down from bangalore in one day was a bit tiring. 13. Canyon is a one overnight trip. Pls note that, the make shift tents are suitable only for night stay. If you are staying for more days, go for permanent tents of the resort. 14. Best time to visit is the winter - Oct to Jan. 15. Chose a full moon night to make the whole sight spectacular. 16. The operators give basic rubber bedding in the tents, carry sleeping bags. Tents are clean- no complaints 17. Pls don’t litter

Great Indian canon of India...Beautiful place for night camp & a day visit. Night camping was the best & awesome experience at this place. Have to be careful at rainy season as the rocks would be bit slippery. Best time to visit is during Oct-Feb - after rainy season & during winter season. Summer would be very hot here.
