since we only had couple of days to take off, we decided to go to AP side, since we hadnt travelled much in this direction. We decided to go to Gandikota (India's Grand Canyon) and Belum Caves (India's Luray Caverns). Since its a 6 hour drive, we didnt want to drive back the same day and staying in Anantapur wasnt much appealing - both because its a developed city and also the travel would be 2 hour+. Also, this wasnt a 2-day itinerary, so we searched and found Yaganti temple, with its unique caves and historical significance. So, here was the itinerary: 1. Start in morning from Whitefield and reach Royal County resort in Proddatur (an hour from Gandikota) 2. visit Gandikota in evening 3. Visit Belum caves in morning, then go to Yaganti temple and return in evening Going to resort directly added an hour of travel vs going directly to Gandikota, but it was worth to freshen up, have lunch and then enjoy sunset in Gandikota. We started off at 7am on weekday during the Diwali week, had breakfast and reached Royal county resort in time for lunch at 2pm. Google maps was fairly accurate, except in the end it took us a mud path, which we travelled 0.5km and then it was so filled up with water that we decided not to risk getting car stuck in mud and took a detour adding 15-20 min travel time. Roads were mostly ok, though we pass thru several villages with humps that are unmarked, you realize after hard braking for few to look out for them as settlements approach. The weather was excellent, drizzling half the way and cloudy remaining time. Read my review on Royal County resort, where we stayed. After lunch and short break, we headed to Gandikota, an hour's drive from the resort. Good roads, and nearly empty, being weekday. Asked for parking and realized, we can drive through the fort, which was an excellent experience. Drove through the fort passage and doorways, then there is narrow populated road past the jail and near juma masjid, there is few car parking space. As the water storage tank was full, water had flooded the road and cow dung etc made the place really dirty. The places are in absolute ruin except the charminar and juma masjid, granary buildings, which have been repaired/painted. neither any information written about the signficance of the buildings. The places/directions are well marked, once past the fort, and we headed straight to the penna river gorge, the Indian Grand Canyon. Rocks were slippery and with caution we reached the viewpoint where very beautiful canyon view is there amidst the erstwhile fort ruins on the side. Penna river is green and the canyon walls are very beautiful. it was extremely windy and started drizzling, so we could spend only few min taking pictures and filling up the beautiful views in our eyes. Temple ruins on the way gives a great view from the height and we saw the ornate pillars, the Idol having been removed longtime back. Granary is still intact with huge pillars, I am sure it stored enough rations for the fort's soldiers for a long seige. APTDC or ASI should develop this place better and maybe charge entry tickets to fund it. there is so much potential, looks like no willingness..

Granary is located inside the Gandikota fort. There are many constructions inside fort such as granary, masjid, temple, charminar, gorge view point etc. All of this can be covered in half day. Camping is also available outside the fort premises.

Gandikota, the only Canyon in our Peninsula! This place is vast & options for camping are unlimited as its legal. The gorge & the Fort are the highlights of this place, makes you feel you travelled back to a medieval times!, we can camped there with some odds like interference of some localities. If you know telugu it would b much helpful. India's grand canyon.........

We liked the mini Indian Grand Canyon, place worth visit and only 300 km drive from Bangalore. It is not very crowded and can be enjoyed peacefully by any couple or group friends. The speed boat available at the canal shouldn’t be missed at all.

Awesome place, amazing view. Natural Beauty of India. We loved Grand Canyon of India. place worth visit, after amazing long drive from all the way from Hyderabad. It is not very crowded and can be enjoyed peacefully by any couple or group friends. The speed boat available at the canal shouldn’t be missed at all. Negative point is except haritha resort you will not find any place to stay. Camps are seasonable. Also lack of food at this place. You can just go and enjoy the natural Beauty.
