At the road level entry-point, one sees red rocky land that leads to a precarious drop to a valley below, where the Shilabati River weaves its way across the canyon floor. An array of jagged laterite cliffs are prominently visible. “Wind and water have collaborated over millions of years to carve and chisel a craggy ravine-filled landscape of forbidding splendour.” Locals call it Gongoni Danga or Gongoni Khola. The more imaginative city folk have christened it as the Grand Canyon of West Bengal. The local municipality has developed steps for visitors to go down through the gorge, several stories deep, the river has carved out over the years. As one descends the colours change to various hues of yellow. In the dry season, there is not much water in the river, but as the rains come, the river occupies many of the deeper parts of the canyon alleys. As one gets deep into the canyon, one gets a feeling of actual shapes and sizes of imaginary things. Some piece looks like a lion, another has look of a pagoda. There is a large cave with an interesting story.

The only such place in West Bengal, it's a good place to visit for a day trip. The last part of the road is slushy, so make sure to drive carefully. There are no good facilities like drinking water or toilet. There's a picnic spot though which you can book in advance.

Last year, when my cousin and me- both were getting bored at at home, we randomly decided one night to visit Gangani, aka the Grand Canyon of Bengal. We had read a lot about the place and had been willing to go since long, and there we were finally, next noon, boarding the train to Chandrakona Road! It takes approximately 1.5 hours in total, from Bankura Jn. to Chandrakona Road by train, and then to Gangani by auto/e-rickshaw. To be honest, this is one of the random decisions that I won't ever regret. From the top of the cliff, the whole panoromic view of the gorges, faraway forests and the river flowing in between appeared magical! It was noon and off season, hence there were no tourists (and no tourist means no noise, no plastic, no hassle, Thank God!). The Silabati river, with her water flowing swiftly and shining against the sun as if a thousand diamonds sparkling, makes it impossible to believe that she has cut through these hard laterite rocks over centuries and carved out multiple gorges with variety of shapes, and shades ranging from pale yellow to golden. We both took our time and walked though the approachable trails the old river course has left behind, gazing at the high gorges. Few fishermen were on the sandbanks to get their livelihood going. Local folklore says Bheema, one of the pancha Pandavas, killed the demon Bakasura in a cave (see photo); and the fight caused the land to cripple. We were lucky enough as the day was partly cloudy and we got spared from direct sunlight. It was 5 in the afternoon; dark clouds started piling up. For one last time, we sat on the top cliff again for a few minutes in silence, amazed by the surreal nature harbouring beauty and history. The approaching rain was visible faraway. Our tireness soothed by the cool winds by now, we packed up, and headed back towards home.

The view of the valley from the top was really breathtaking. Come any time, but I think winter and post monsoon are the best time to explore this place. This landscape is made up of Qutarnary Sedimentary rocks(mainly laterite of Pleistocene age). You can also observe reel and gully erosion everywhere.

Nice place for spending some time. Nice photos to click. But please make sure to visit during daytime only. Bikers may enjoy the narrow roads in the jungle.
