Gopeshwar Mahadev temple is one of the oldest and unique temples in Vrindavan, located near Vanshi Vat in the close vicinity of Yamuna river. The principal deity of the temple is Lord Shiva worshipped in the form of Gopeshwar (lingam) which is guised as a Gopi. It is believed that Shri Gopeshwar lingam was established by the great grandson of Lord Krishna, Vrajanabha. It is one of the few temples dedicated to Lord Shiva in Vrindavan, where Lord Krishna’s presence dominates the minds of the people as well as the space in the holy city. This temple signifies the confluence of masculine and feminine powers of nature. As per the popular belief, Lord Krishna and Sri Radha Rani along with the gopis were performing Raas Leela on the night of Sharad Purnima, when Lord Shiva expressed his wish to be a part of the same to experience the bliss of Raas Leela. However, Lord Shiva, being a male was not permitted to do so and was stopped by Vrinda Devi. Determined to participate, Lord Shiva started praying and meditating on Goddess Radha who gave him permission to join Raas Leela after getting induced into Sakhi Bhav. Lord Shiva took a dip in the holy Yamuna river and emerged as a beautiful damsel, after which he was allowed into the Raas mandal. Being an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva himself, Lord Krishna recognised the female guise of him and named her Gopeshwar. It is also believed that the lingam at the Gopeshwar temple was the one worshipped by the Brij Bhoomi gopis to attain Lord Krishna as their husband.

An historical mythological temple, where lord Shiva is viraajman in the form of one of the Gopi, who were the dance partners of Shri Krishna's raasleela. As per Hindu Mythology, Lord Shiva came there to witness the Raas Leela of Shri Krishna and his group of Gopies. That's why the temple has been named as Gopi+Ishwar i.e. Gopeshwar.

Visited on Shivratri and the crowd was unimaginable. Whole market heading to the temple was decorated with lights which were looking wonderful and many small vendors were ther selling clay piggybanks. This temple is famaous for the story when lord shiva came to attend maharas with Gopis and Krishna but he was restricted being amale so with the help of Yamuna maharani he dressed up like a Gopi and attended the maharas. This place comes under vansivat but due to high population all the near by space has been occupied. Ranji temple,Radha ramanji temple, govind devji temple, banke bihari ji temple and lot more all these temples are walking distance. You can have darshan in all the temples. BEWARE OF MONKEYS ( SPECS AND MOBILES). Very beautiful place must visit.

It's the time to play Raas, Krishna is all set to play bansuri, Gauri I also want to go and do Raasleela. You can't enter as only women are allowed in Raasleela gopi denied the entry. It's time to shiva to wear sari and do shringar and became a gopi to dance with Krishna. Here in morning the shringar is of Shiva as sansyasi from Ash but in evening shiva linga is decorated with sari and women make up to make him Gopi .

A very small temple of Lord Shiva having a shivling. Floor was all wet during my visit. At times it becomes very crowded. I don't come to know anything special about this temple. You can visit if you are nearby.
