The literal translation of the term Gurdwara is "the Guru's door", but it also means "the gateway to the guru". Any place where the Guru Granth Sahib is installed and treated with due respect according to Sikh Rehat Maryada (the Sikh code of conduct and convention) can be referred to as a Gurdwara, whether it is a room in one's own house or a separate building. A Gurdwara is a place of worship for Sikhs; however, people of all faiths are welcomed in the Gurdwara. The Gurdwara has a 'Darbar Sahib' where the Sri Guru Granth Sahib (the Sikh scripture) is seen and a 'Langar' hall where people can eat free food. A Gurdwara may also have a library, nursery, and classroom. A Gurdwara can be spotted from a distance by the yellow triangular flag hoisted from a pole in the compound. The flag is called the Nishan Sahib. Early Gurdwaras were known as a Dharamsala (a spiritual dwelling or religous resthouse, sanctuary). The most well-known Gurdwara is Sri Harmandir Sahib (also known as the Golden Temple) in Amritsar, Punjab, India. Please note, describing a Gurdwara as a 'Temple' is incorrect as the term is associated for places of worship with other religions.

Guru Hargobind, the sixth Guru of the Sikhs was born on June 14,1595 at village Wadali, near Amritsar city. The birth place of the Guru has beautiful shrine named as Gurudwara Guru Ki Wadali. This small village has become a place of pilgrimage, where devotees come from far and near to pay homage to Mata Ganga who gave birth to the great Guru, the giver of a new direction to the Sikh faith.

The Birth place of 6th Sikh Guru, Shri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji. He was the son of 5th Sikh Guru Shri Guru Arjun dev ji and mata Ganga ji. Shri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji were born on 19 June (1595 - 3 March 1644), revered as the sixth Nanak. He had become Guru at the young age of eleven, after the execution of his father, Guru Arjun dev ji, by the Mughal emperor Jahangir Guru Hargobind introduced the process of militarization to Sikhism, likely as a response to his father's execution and to protect the Sikh community. He symbolized it by wearing two swords, representing the dual concept of miri and piri (temporal power and spiritual authority). In front of the Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar, Guru Hargobind constructed the Akal Takht (the throne of the timeless one). The Akal Takht represents the highest seat of earthly authority of the Khalsa (the collective body of the Sikhs) today.
