★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The heritage preservation status of any big city is generally guaged by the number & state of the structures of historical importance, which are at least over a hundred years old. Mumbai, unfortunately would not rank very high on the heritage front, despite being steeped in history. All is not lost, though. The Mumbai Pyaau Project, for example, is a commendable effort for awareness, conservation and restoration of the fifty plus colonial-era drinking water fountains that dot the length and breadth of the city. The Keshavji Naik Pyaau, in particular, provides a fine example of restoration. Made originally of basalt, limestone, Malad stone, and red sandstone, this grand edifice occupies a central place in the Masjid Bunder market area, situated at the very busy junction of Keshavji Naik Road & Narsi Natha Street. The Pyaau is now functional, with drinking water served in brass vessels. The fountain is spread over at least 150 sq. ft. area, and has been declared a Grade II-A structure in Mumbai's heritage list. The dome which houses the clock tower (with two clocks at the front and back) is supported by 12 exquisitely carved pillars. The dome itself is adorned with animal (elephants & peacocks) motif panels, and most of the structure is encircled by a trough, originally meant to quench the thirst of horses and other animals passing by. The two sets of steps leading up to the main chamber below the dome are guarded on either side by two Nandi statues (Nandi being the vehicle of choice for Lord Shiva in mythology). On the front face of the fountain, etched in stone, is the face of Keshavji Naik, the patron who funded this wonderful sculpture. On opposing left and right sides near the base, are two marble plaques in Gujarati and English respectively, which provide historical information about all the people associated with the fountain. Also inscribed are the date of inauguration (January 8, 1976) and the costs involved (Rs. 23000, a colossal amount for that period).
