The Kumbha Shyam Temple is a temple dedicated to Krishna. Originally it was dedicated to the Viraha form of Vishnu and known as Viraha Temple. It’s a typical North Indian style Indo-Aryan Nagara Hindu temple with a conical shaped pyramid roof over the sanctum. The only remaining evidence of the Viraha is a relief sculpture in a niche directly behind the sanctum, reachable via the ambulatory. There’s a good amount of decoration on the exterior of the temple, but not quite as elaborate as other temples in the fort complex. This temple does have one unusual feature. Instead of a Nandi platform in front of the portico, the platform in front has a kneeling figure of Garuda. This temple is right next to Meera temple and it’s worthwhile visiting both at the same time.

The temple was constructed during the rule of Rana Kumbha and is built in the Indo-Aryan style, popular during the time. It bears a strong connection to the mystic poetess Meerabai, a celebrated Bhakti saint and a devotee of Lord Krishna. She is known to have suffered a lot, especially at the hands of her in-laws, because of her devotion. #KumbhaShyamTemple

Kumbha Shyam Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, who is worshipped here as Varaha (His boar incarnation). The shrine was constructed by Maharana Sangram Singh I, upon special request of his daughter-in-law, Meera. It is located near the Kumbha Temple inside the Chittorgarh Fort.

The Kumbha Shyam Temple served as a private place of worship for Meera Bai. She spent long hours here in dedication to Lord Vishnu. Benign at heart, she fed the poor and the visiting pilgrims with her personal share of wealth. Meera Bai was the follower of Guru from the holy land of Varanasi. The Kumbbha Shyam Temple has a Chattri dedicated to her guru, Swami Ravidas, who was also known as Swami Raidas. The markings of the footprints of Guru Ravidas have been preserved in this place of pilgrimage. HISTORY Maharana Kumbha also known as Kumbhakarna Singh was the son of Rana Mokal and Maharani Sobhagya Devi. He ruled Mewar from 1433 to 1468. Maharana Kumbha was a Hindu and had a great inclination towards music and art. Meera Bai was an ardent devotee of Lord Krishna. She got married to Rana Kumbha in 1513 and then accompanied him to Chittorgarh. The Kumbha Shyam temple was built on her request. The Kumbha Shyam Temple was originally built in the eighth century. Maharana Kumbha later repaired and revamped the temple during the fifteenth century. Thereafter the temple was renamed after him.
