★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Ahmedabad, one of the preferred vacation destinations of history buffs as it proffers an array of ancient sites visited by travellers to discover the rich history behind them.
And one such Historical monument Bhadra Fort had been built by Ahmed Shah, founder of Ahmedabad in 1411 Ad, which was named after the famed Bhadrakali temple near it.
Located near Lal Darwaza on Jijabai Marg, Bhadra Fort built in red stone, is a striking monument that bears the hallmark of Indo-Saracenic style of architecture.
The remarkable Bhadra fort houses fourteen circular structures, three big gates, three mid-sized gates and two smaller gates. British East India Company installed a clock tower in the fort in 1878 which had a kerosene lamp for lightning it in the night. It was then replaced by an electric lamp in 1915 by the Britishers.
Bhadra Fort is open from 9 AM in the morning till 5 PM in the evening. There is no entry fee for visiting Bhadra Fort.
There’s also a huge market is held on the street besides Bhadra Fort, where all essential items are available at cheaper prices.
At present the Bhadra Fort houses the offices of Archaeological Survey of India, Post Office and the Civil Courts. Most part of the palace accommodates the offices.
Important national events like Independence Day and Republic day are celebrated in the Fort.
I visited here, during my last visit to Ahmedabad and enjoyed street shopping at Lal Darwaza and also had blessings of Goddess Bhadrakali Mata.
