Having a legacy transitioned through capturing many eras of India’s growth from a mere British colonial rule to a global presence, Mahatta & Co. forever believed in creating a worldwide thrill through their evergreen printing, image processing, photo archives, and image restoration services.
Mahatta & Co. was originally set up in 1915 in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, by the young scion of a landowning family in Punjab—Amar Nath. He learned photography from visiting foreign army personnel and soon indulged in clicking group portraits in Dalhousie army camp. Amar Nath, however, realized photography was perhaps his only hope of earning a dignified livelihood.
Soon after, with the mere mispronunciation of ‘Mehta,’ Mahatta & Co. came into existence and never looked back. Gradually, the timeless Mahatta empire expanded into the various tourist towns of Gulmarg, Pahalgam in Kashmir, and Murree and Rawalpindi, while proving the partition as the first game-changer in their legacy.
Post-partition, the shop in Rawalpindi and Murree shut down, and the brothers decided to open a new studio in the capital city of free India, Delhi. By handing over the highly successful Srinagar studio’s reign to his youngest brother Ram Chand, Amar Nath and his other brother Ram Nath moved to Delhi, an unknown and uncertain market. Over the decades, the Mahatta Studio saw many chapters open and close. What lingered throughout this time was the legacy of a camera and black & white images of a man who picked it up, searching for a new future.
Today the fourth generation of the Mehta family, once uprooted from its heritage, is living and breathing photography in the heart of the nation’s capital. Time and again, they together wrote their history and turned their adversity into an opportunity! The Mahatta & Co. have always dreamt of building an unsurpassable brand, and so what they did.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ It was my first time here. Papa asked me to go because I was going to purchase my first DSLR and this was a very very very old shop.
I went there. Please exit from Gate no. 3 of Rajiv Chowk Metro station if you are coming via metro. Then consult Google maps. Shop is just about 100m from there.
Visiting it changed so many things in my mind. I found such a strange adda, a little mecca for my vocation, my passion called photo graphy.
Met the old uncle. Old people are mostly lovely, calm, composed, wise, knowledgable; glad to report he seemed all of these.
My friend and me took a brief tour of the place - their antique collection was awe-worthy, portraits and photographs hungs were amazing.
The Sahab himself, the owner, the old uncle from above from above answered all my queries.
I shook hands with him. And left the place.
Me and my friend felt so grateful and left with good vibes.

They are photo goods dealers, ultra modern photo studio, digital photo finishing lab and have got a wonderful collection of cameras and accessories which have been used by photographers since photography was invented way back in 1876. You can see there large format plate and flat film cameras, view cameras, medium format TLRs, SLRs, compact cameras, bridge cameras, fixed focus roll film cameras, lighting systems and what not and all of these are in excellent condition.
Whenever I have had time to interact with Mr. Pawan Mahatta, I got the impression that photography is not merely a source of bread and butter for him. Rather, he is deeply in love with photography and the legacy continues to the 3rd generation of Mahattas.
I have never used their services as photo studio because i am a photography enthusiast myself. I regularly used their photo lab services.
