National Facility for Insect Rearing and Xenobiotic-cum-Transgenic Bioassays is located in the Division of Entomology, ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi-110012. The concept of developing National Facility for Insect Rearing and Xenobiotic-cum-Transgenic Bioassays facility at Division of Entomology, IARI, New Delhi was conceived by Dr. G. T. Gujar (Head, Division of Entomology) in 2007-08 to conduct insect rearing research and other activities related to rearing like development of ready-to-use artificial diet, mass rearing system, and in vitro and in situ bioassay protocols. As a result project was funded under Outreach programme in Five year plan (2007-12). Of late, in view of developments in insect protective transgenics, development of mass rearing techniques for insects like borers and monophagous ones has become a challenging task for bioassays of plant incorporated protectants (PIP) and other xenobiotics. Besides mass rearing, rearing of insects qualitatively has become a necessity to avoid interference of obligate pathogenic and nonpathogenic microbes associated with insects. The baseline susceptibility status of important insect pests to xenobiotics can act as a guide to predict resistance development and ensuring the sustainability of the crops.

National facility for insect rearing and xenobiotic-cum-transgenic Bioassays (Entomology) is situated in PUSA campus, Indian agricultural Research Institute(IARI) , New Delhi, India. Its been an excellent center for rearing insect pest which are needed for experiments, such as bioassays for testing various novel pesticides or native Bt isolates. Insects are used for other purposes too.The lab is fully equipped for easy and efficient rearing of many lepidopteran pests ( Helicoverpa armigera (Insecta: Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Spodoptera litura (Insecta: Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Spodoptera exigua (Insecta: Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Earias vittella (Insecta: Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Pectinophora gossypiella (Insecta: Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) and Maruca vitrata (Insecta: Lepidoptera: Crambidae) , Leauciniodes orbonalis and Plutella xylostella .Other insects like Bactrocera species and aphid species is also reared here.
