★ ★ ★ ★ ★ New Theatres 1, commonly known as NT1, is one of the oldest cinema studios in India. At that time Film making hub meant Kolkata. Bombay, presently Mumbai was coming up. During that time Babu B. N. Sirkar constructed this studio during British Rule. Late B. N. Sirkar was the son of Sir Nripendra Nath Sirkar a mathematician, author of Mathematics books and educationist, he has a School in his name Sir Nripendra Nath Institution for boys as well as for girls. During those days getting involved in films was a heinous job so B. N. Sirkar was kept away from all family occasions.
New Theatre Studio and India Film Laboratory also had its own laboratory to develope film after shooting. It was a complete Film factory, all things under one roof. Directors, technicians, Artistes were paid on a monthly basis just like any other job. Later the system changed.
This NT 1 Studio is famous because Nobel Laureate RABINDRA NATH TAGORE shot his movie NATIR PUJA here. There is a Kali temple inside the studio. Rabindra nath used to sit here and shoot. Another famous thing to mention about this studio is that there is a personal Make up room of Mahanayak Uttam Kumar. After the death of B. N. Sirkar the studio used to run by a Group of ten eminent persons, of which one of them was Uttam Kumar. Almost all Association and Guild offices of Eastern India are inside this studio. It has a rich cultural heritage.
