The Institute is engaged in Research and Development in Basic Sciences, specifically in the area of physical sciences and related disciplines. Major Research Areas are Astrophysics & Cosmology, Chemical, Biological & Macro-Molecular Sciences,Theoretical Sciences etc.The Centre also offers a programme leading to PhD degree for residential scholars.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ One of the best research institute. Well built and maintained with beautiful gardens. There are two gates, only one is open. The guest house has excellent facilities, one person per room, a payable mess inside offers good quality food and hot beverages are available almost all the time besides the reception. Very friendly staff and securities. There are very limited number of hotels for stay as well as food near the campus. All cab facilities available. Very close to Nicco Park and Salt Lake Stadium. The lecture complex is the best and well equipped with instruments. A very good library both in quality and space. Print and photocopying facilities available in the library. Take it to be one of the best institutes in the country.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ It’s very nice research institute. Students can register in Calcutta University or Jadavpur University.
It is quite small though. Almost 150 researchers do their research here. To get chances in PhD you have to clear NET(JRF) or GATE or you have to be a INSPIRE scholar. By NGPE or JEST you could get chance to do integrated PhD (M.Sc. + PhD ).
