Executive Director and Mentor, Marcus Aurelius Learning Solutions.I have recently spent some months visiting the Bagiya school of the Sanshil foundation, run by the tireless Shilpa Sonal, Prerna Gupta and their ever-smiling team of volunteers. One has to visit Bagiya to realise just how much of a difference Shilpa and team are making to the group of youngsters who have the good fortune of being here, They have a well thought-through plan for the kids that takes into account both the possibilities and the realities of the situation, allowing them to learn initial levels of academic subjects, arts, crafts and life-skills, then springboarding them into a mainstream school, and finally creating viable opportunities for their employment and successful societal assimilation. During my few months with Bagiya, I have had the wonderful opportunity to fix broken computer hardware for the kids, sit in brainstorming sessions with Shilpa and team for some of their issues, and observe the successful unfolding of a New York based empowerment program for the kids, with potentially huge social impact. That I'm impressed with the deep involvement, empathy, positivity and resourcefulness of everyone at Bagiya would be an understatement. Let me just say that Bagiya is giving back immeasurably to society, something we often neglect in our lives, and I would encourage everybody to offer any resource they have available to the Bagiyas around us.
