About Read India

About Read India

READ establishes Community Library and Resource Centers (READ CLRC) by partnering with rural communities across India.

We are reaching out to these communities through 228 Villages, 18 districts, spread across 12 states through various projects supported by Corporates and Government.

What We Do?

The READ Model is a proven and replicable set of programs which are primarily based on the establishment of Community Library and Resource Centers (CLRCs), with the full consent and involvement of the rural community in which it is located.

Each center is easily accessible, and includes a library, a computer room, a training hall and sections for children and women. The centers organize activities and programs for training the community members in specialized skills. We also recognize their existing abilities, and help members to advance and market them.

Communities have challenges which differ depending on the region, the culture, the language spoken and geographical factors. Common patterns have been found in all communities, with the problems of illiteracy and poverty being most pervasive in many rural villages.

READ India connects with local partners and corporate organizations to provide training programs in vocational skills, as well as introduce efforts to educate and economically empower villagers, and teach them to use technology to enhance their standard of living.

Women and children in particular are given the chance to learn to read and write, and to earn a living out of the skills they acquire from the center. Youngsters are provided with the skill sets and knowledge which can help them determine their choice of livelihood.

READ India’s ultimate aim is to eventually withdraw from the community, by having the community members take ownership of the center and operate it themselves. This will allow them to grow as an independent, responsible and sustainable community.

Currently, READ India has 41 centers located in the states of Delhi, Haryana, Maharashtra, Manipur, Karnataka, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Bihar, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

Vision

READ believes empowering rural communities is critical to alleviating global poverty. We envision a world where individuals, families and entire communities have access to the knowledge, resources and opportunities necessary to build a more prosperous future through Community Library and Resource Centers (READ Centers).

Mission

We partner with rural communities in India to create a sustainable model for social and economic transformation

I was debating if I should flag this incident or not considering it involves an NGO that otherwise does good work, but it is important to warn other freelancers to tread carefully when working with them. > On January 20th, I was connected to Geeta Malhotra, the Country Director of READ India by an ex-client. They needed a content writer to ghostwrite a book for them. > On February 17th, emails were exchanged with more details and a discussion also happened regarding the timeline. > On February 18th, a discounted project fee was locked in by Geeta for me to come on board for this project, and a timeline was also locked in. This confirmation was officially provided in a written email. A payment structure was also agreed upon (i.e. instalments). Geeta asked me to raise an Invoice for an advance payment, but was yet to send me the details to mention on the Invoice (i.e. which name to raise the invoice to). > On February 20th, I sent Geeta a follow-up because she did not send the details to mention on the Invoice, and there were some more documents she was yet to send, including a letter. Geeta emailed me back that she will send the pending information on Monday, and we were to hop on a call on Tuesday. We were operating with a tight deadline considering the number of interviews to conduct and transcribe for their book. Considering the project was going to take a solid 1-2 months of my time, I did not entertain other client inquiries, so there would be no conflict. > On February 24th, Geeta said it is taking more time from her end, and she asked me to wait until February 26th for the missing information / files. > There was 0 word from Geeta's end. I was feeling anxious because a) this project was worth an amount that was going to help me sustain myself for nearly 5 months and b) I had not taken on any other assignments to make sure I could deliver their book on time. I sent a follow-up email on March 1st. > On March 3rd, Geeta emailed me back that the project has suddenly been canned. 0 compensation was offered for blocking my time and misleading me since February 18th's written confirmation that the project had been handed over to me. The work READ India does might be great, but their protocol regarding working with freelancers is not very ethical.
