महाशिवरात्रि व्रत की कथा
किसी समय वाराणसी के जंगल में एक भील रहता था। उसका नाम गुरुद्रुह था। वह जंगली जानवरों का शिकार कर अपना परिवार पालता था। एक बार शिवरात्रि पर वह शिकार करने वन में गया। उस दिन उसे दिनभर कोई शिकार नहीं मिला और रात भी हो गई। तभी वो झील के किनारे पेड़ पर ये सोचकर चढ़ गया कि कोई भी जानवर पानी पीने आएगा तो शिकार कर लूंगा। वो पेड़ बिल्ववृक्ष था और उसके नीचे शिवलिंग स्थापित था। वहां एक हिरनी आई। शिकारी ने उसको मारने के लिए धनुष पर तीर चढ़ाया तो बिल्ववृक्ष के पत्ते और जल शिवलिंग पर गिरे। इस प्रकार रात के पहले प्रहर में अनजाने में ही उसके द्वारा शिवलिंग की पूजा हो गई। हिरनी भी भाग गई। थोड़ी देर बाद एक और हिरनी झील के पास आ गई। शिकारी ने उसे देखकर फिर से अपने धनुष पर तीर चढ़ाया। इस बार भी रात के दूसरे प्रहर में बिल्ववृक्ष के पत्ते व जल शिवलिंग पर गिरे और शिवलिंग की पूजा हो गई। वो हिरनी भी भाग गई। इसके बाद उसी परिवार का एक हिरण वहां आया इस बार भी वही सब हुआ और तीसरे प्रहर में भी शिवलिंग की पूजा हो गई। वो हिरण भी भाग गया। फिर हिरण अपने झुंड के साथ वहां पानी पीने आया सबको एक साथ देखकर शिकारी बड़ा खुश हुआ और उसने फिर से अपने धनुष पर बाण चढ़ाया, जिससे चौथे प्रहर में पुन: शिवलिंग की पूजा हो गई। इस तरह शिकारी दिनभर भूखा-प्यासा रहकर रात भर जागता रहा और चारों प्रहर अनजाने में ही उससे शिवजी की पूजा हो गई, जिससे शिवरात्रि का व्रत पूरा हो गया। इस व्रत के प्रभाव से उसके पाप भस्म हो गए और पुण्य उदय होते ही उसने हिरनों को मारने का विचार छोड़ दिया। तभी शिवलिंग से भगवान शंकर प्रकट हुए और उन्होंने शिकारी को वरदान दिया कि त्रेतायुग में भगवान राम तुम्हारे घर आएंगे और तुम्हारे साथ मित्रता करेंगे। तुम्हें मोक्ष भी मिलेगा। इस प्रकार अनजाने में किए गए शिवरात्रि व्रत से भगवान शंकर ने शिकारी को मोक्ष प्रदान कर दिया

Story of Mahashivratri fast

Thus, in the first watch of the night, unknowingly worshiped Shivling by him. The deer ran away too. After a while came another deer lake. The hunter saw it again and again arrows his bow. This time also, on the second afternoon of the night, the leaves of Bilvriksha fell on the Shivlinga and the water of Shiva was worshiped. The hare also ran away. After this there was a deer of the same family who came there and this same thing happened at the same time and in the third Prahar was also worshiped for Shiva. The deer ran away too. Then the deer came to drink water there with his herd. The hunter was very happy to see all of them together and he again made a bow on his bow, from which the Shiva lingam was worshiped again in the fourth afternoon. In this way the hunter woke up all night long after staying hungry and thirsty, and all four unknowingly worshiped Lord Shiva, due to which the fast of Shivratri was completed. With the effect of this fast, his sins were burnt, and when the virtue emerged he left the idea of killing the deer. Only then Lord Shankar appeared from Shivling and he boasted the hunter that Lord Rama will come to your house in Tretayug and will befriend you. You will also get salvation. Thus, in the unknowingly Shivaratri fast, Lord Shankar gave salvation to the hunter
