Konark Sun Temple is famous for its unique architecture. Its geometrical patterns and carved wheels used to serve as sun dials. One can witness three images of Sun God at three directions to catch the rays of the Sun at dawn, noon and sunset.

BUILT BY king Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty around 1250 CE. the temple complex has a 100-foot (30 m) high chariot with many wheels and horses, all carved in beautiful stone. Now much is in ruins, Understand the large shikara tower over the sanctuary; had a height much higher than the mandapa that remains. The structures and elements are famed for their intricate artwork and themes, including erotic kama and mithuna scenes. As per a local GUIDE , it was called the "Black Pagoda" because it looked like a great tiered tower which appeared black. & served as an important landmark for sailors in the Bay of Bengal. Konark Sun Temple is depicted on the reverse side of the Indian currency note - 10 rupees to signify its importance to our cultural heritage.
