This is a secret hidden jewel which stares you in the face when you pass it by but don't pay attention to it. The art here is painstakingly tedious to perform but the skilled coppersmiths make it look easy. Very friendly people making it and reasonable prices as well.

Pune's only authentic copper workshops area where you will find all your copper utencils made by old days technicians by their ancient hand tools used over the generations...

There are some places in the Cultural city of Pune where the culture is still alive!! One such place is the Tambat aali or the coppersmiths lane. It is located in Kasba peth near the Kasba Ganpati Temple. It is a lane where all workshops belong to these coppersmiths who have been practicing this art for ages. If you are lucky enough, you get to see the entire process of how a beautiful object is made from a sheet of copper! It is indeed the best place to buy copper and brass artefacts as the money directly goes to the artisans and no middle men are involved. They even customise gifts and artefacts. Definitely a worth visiting place to conserve our cultural heritage.

This small, tiny alley in Kasba Peth, the old part of Pune is a delight for you if heritage and traditions interest you. It's a centuries old manufacturing hub of coppersmiths (Tambat) engaged in making water bottles, containers, vases, utensils, hanging lamps and other decorative as well as utilitarian items in copper. Barely 5 minutes walk from Shaniwar wada, this alley is definitely worth visiting. Observe all the tools, chisels, hammers of various sizes employed by the coppersmiths to manufacture copperware. You will be drawn into the alley by the sonorous sound of hammer beating and an entirely new world will open up before your eyes. Look for wares drying up on the roofs. My recommendations: buy wares for home, at least a water bottle to support the sellers.

You will find traditional copper smith workshops here. You can buy copper vessels at a very reasonable price (almost at half of the retail price in the city). Try to go from Mondays to Saturdays as on Sundays most of the workshops are closed. You can even visit one of their workshops and see the whole process.

Tambat Ali, a settlement of Tambat or copper craftsman came into existence around 400 yrs ago during the time of Peshwas. Most of them originally came from Konkan. As you walk towards the bylanes of kasba peth ganpati, you shall start hearing faint noise of hammering and as you reach closer the sounds starts getting stronger and louder. Do visit the place to see the making of copper and brass utensils or decorative items. Do support the craft and craftsmen.
