★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This beautiful temple is located near Sursagar Lake & near a lane to Jubilee Baug. Princess Tarabai was born to Maharani Jamnabai, few months after Maharaja Khanderao died in 1870. There was no male heir and Khanderao’s younger brother Malharrao did not augur well as a King. Hence, Gopalrao (aka Maharaja Sayaji Rao Gakewad III) were adopted in 1875. Sayaji Rao loved his adoptive sister and did her Kanyaadaan to Maharaja Sawantwadi in mid 1880’s. However, the little Queen, Tarabai passed away in 1895, followed by her aggrieved Mother in 1897. Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III ordered to built the ‘Tarkeshwar Mahadev Temple’ on the Northern banks of Sursagar Lakeas a tribute to his darling sister. It is still controlled by the family, as Devsthan Trust.
Maharaja Sayaji Rao had cried then and said “No brother can be more mis-fortunate than the one who is forced to light a sister’s pyre”. The temple stands tall even today and is visited by newly married couples to be blessed by the soul of the teenage queen. Till his end 45 yrs later in 1939, Maharaja Sayaji Rao paid visit to this temple either on ‘Raksha-Bandhan’ or ‘Bhai Beej/Bhai Duj’.
