Situated amidst spacious and well-managed gardens, the Calico Museum is one of the oldest textile museums in the country. Founded by a businessman, Gautam Sarabhai, and run by the Sarabhai Foundation, this museum has an exclusive collection of textiles and fabric designs. It also consists of artefacts, handicrafts and paintings brought from different parts of the country. The entire textile exhibition is spread across 12 rooms and is divided into two sections, one for royal and historic fabric and the other one has religious clothing. The historic section exhibits textiles used in costumes, carpets and other items in use by the rulers and courtiers in between 15th and 19th century. The religious collection there, has crafts related to rituals, religious clothes and temple decoration, among others. Miniature paintings, bronze objects and antique furniture are also on display in Calico Museum. Apart from being one of the prominent tourist places to visit in Ahmedabad near Sabarmati Ashram, this museum also attracts plenty of students and researchers. They visit the site not only to explore the history of textiles but also, appreciate and get into the details. The museum houses galleries giving information about various techniques and also, a library. Museum authorities organise workshops too, to help enthusiasts learn more about textiles, and in a better way.

Must place for people who are interested in textile history of India. Textile art from all over the India is showcased here. A proper guiding is give by the Calico guide. No entry fee. They only take 20 people per day. Need to book an appointment before visiting there. No phones and camera allowed in. Also provides snacks at the end tour.

If you only have time to cover one attraction in Ahmedabad, this museum should be it (over and above Gandhi's Ashram). It is a private museum and no fee is charged for a comprehensive guided tour by a knowledgeable in-house guide and a very close-up viewing of a magnificent collection (not just religious textiles and costumes, but also other artworks). Totally worth the time. Be sure to book ahead as there is a tour quota each day.

People here aren't helpful moreover it's not mentioned on the Google that they have prior appointment policy. Rude staff. Pathetic experience. Being an outsider they didn't guide us properly. Numbers given on the pamphlet is out of service. 1 star to them.

I'm a hobby fashion designer who loves texting and different kinds of fabric. This museum is a treasure of fabric where we can see all kinds of block prints embroidery and pure gold threads viewing pure silk fabrics. They kept so may old raja maharajas cloth which they preserved. Main thing is if u want to visit the place you shd book previously in website or u shd send a mail, mail ID provided in website, other wise they will not allow inside. It's like a fabric tour. You should reach before 10.30Am, after that not allowed. A guied will take u to a tour by explaining all kinds of fabric embroidery and the time in which they used.
