It is named after Kunwar Singh, the well known national hero and distinguished freedom fighter of 1857. The university conducts teaching and learning in areas such as physics, chemistry, botany, zoology, mathematics, computer science, commerce, history, economics, management, law, sociology, geography etc. It also runs exchange programs in affiliation with colleges and institutes in and around the state .

There are 5 departments Social science, commerce, Humanities, Science and Vocational. There is around 18 courses offered by the university. For getting admission, one has to appear in entrance exam. There are total 13 colleges registered under VKSU in Bhojpur district (2019). Other districts colleges are Buxar (10), Kaimur (7), Rohtas (27). The university has one main campus in Katira Arrah and hostel is also available for boys and girls.

It has two campuses one at Katira, Arrah which is old campus. Another one at Zero mile, Arrah which is new campus built few years ago. There is high competition to get admission at Veer Kunwar Singh University. It's management system is very poor, which is result of politics.
