The Barabar Hill Caves (Hindi बराबर, Barābar) are the oldest surviving rock-cut caves in India, dating from the Maurya Empire (322–185 BCE), some with Ashokan inscriptions, located in the Makhdumpur region of Jehanabad district, Bihar, India, 24 km (15 mi) north of Gaya.

The Barabar Hill Caves (Hindi बराबर, Barābar) are the oldest surviving rock-cut caves in India, dating from the Maurya Empire (322–185 BCE), some with Ashokan inscriptions, located in the Makhdumpur region of Jehanabad district, Bihar, India, 24 km (15 mi) north of Gaya These caves are situated in the twin hills of Barabar (four caves) and Nagarjuni (three caves). These rock-cut chambers bear dedicatory inscriptions in the name of "King Piyadasi" for the Barabar group, and "Devanampiya Dasaratha" for the Nagarjuni group. Most caves at Barabar consist of two chambers, carved entirely out of granite, with a highly polished internal surface, the "Mauryan polish" also found on sculptures, and exciting echo effects

An amazing tourist destination. The place is situated a little after jahanabad and the path is laden with beautiful scenery lake, rocks and mountains. You can drive both 4 wheeler/2 wheeler there. Take your time and make small pitstops to enjoy the serenity. You will first arrive at the base where you will find small shops and tea stall. Parking is free there. You will encounter the caves pretty early but if you intend to have fun you can trek up to the top where Shiva Mandir is situated. The trek is of medium difficulty. The caves are not huge and are usually locked. The keys are with a tea stall owner there who takes small sum of money and lets you explore them. View around the cave is picturesque.

About 30 Km from Gaya it is located in the Barabar hill. Wonderful place to visit this is the first man made rock cut cave of the world built in Mauryan era at the time of Ashoka the great. Beautifully polished inner wall looks like a mirror and the echo effect of sound is just amazing. The place has rich history and a must visit place for the lover of history and nature. One should take the help of the guide, he is very helpful and is very informative. A day trip is recommended as there is no hotel to stay and the place is very lonely.

One of the very unique experience I have ever had exploring Indian caves of pre christ era. This one was way different because the way it was carved out 1000s years before and you will be shocked to touch and feel the inner linings of the caves. It was magnificently smooth. Truly amazing

A must place to visit... there are 3 way to reach top.. one from Bela side.. only stairs are there so it's little tough because of height of stairs .. one from makhdumpur side.. 3 to 4 km trekking but easy to reach on top... there are so many caves...but for cave you need to go from Bela side....
