In the ancient times, Bishnupur was ruled under the Gupta period by local Hindu kings. Later, it was the capital of the Malla kings of Mallabhum, of which Bankura was a part. The Malla rulers, Bir Hambir and Raghunath Singh built the terracotta temples and fort during the 17th & 18th century at this place. There are 2 Gateways located in this area. The larger one, is a fine arced gateway, popularly known as "Pathar Darwaja". This Gateway was the northern entrance to the ancient fort of Bishnupur. It was built by Malla King Birsingha in the second half of the 17th century. Some parts of this fort do exist even today.

।। গড় দরওয়াজা, বিষ্ণুপুর ।। Gate of Old Fort/ Chota Patthar Darwaja/ Small Gateway of Bishnupur. #Info : This entrance gate is called the Gardarja, which literally means the door of the fort. The fine arched gateway of Old Fort has a central passage for accommodating the Malla Troops. Garh Darwaja is a terracotta gateway situated in Bankura near Bishnupur, a destination famous for its terracotta masonry. Found overlooking the famous Radhakrishna Lalji Temple, Garh Darwaja is an arched terracotta structure with a plain exterior. Currently this gateway is not protected by the ASI and is thus not well maintained. Tourists can also do shopping for terracotta pottery, artefacts, jewellery and Balucheri saris close to this site. © Kousik Sinhamahapatra

A historical place in Bishnupur. Good place to visit & enjoy with family. One of the best architecture in Bishnupur. But now it requires special permission to enter here. This monument is about to ruin due to lack of care.

Although Bishnupur is a popular tourist spot for day trip as well as weekend gateway, yet very few visit the ruins of its fort. The Fort is situated just behind the Mrinmoyee Temple and you have to take a not so friendly trail to reach the ruins. There is nothing left of the fort but one of the walls and the four sentry posts still exists. Built in 1643 by Malla King Raghunath Singh, this five pinnacled Terracotta of Bishnupur is popularly known as "Paanch Chura Mandir". The temple has triple arched gateway on its four sides and has innumerable terracotta artwork on both exterior and interior walls as well as on the four of five towers.
