★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The temple is famous for its annual Rather Yates, or chariot festivals, in which three principal deities are pulled on huge and elaborately decorated temple cars. These gave their name to the English term Juggernaut. Unlike the stone and metal icons found is most Hindu temples, the image of Jagannath is made of wood and is ceremoniously replaced every twelve or nineteen years by exact replica.
The temple is sacred to all hindus and especially in those of the Vaishnava traditions. Many great saints, such as Adi Shankaracharya, Ramananda & Ramanujan were closely associate with the temple. Ramanuja established the Emar Mutt near the temple and the Govardhan Mutt , which is the seat of one of the four Shankaracharyas is also located here. It is also of particular significance to the followers of the Gaudiya Vaishnavism whose founder Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, was attracted to the deity, Jagannath, and lived in Puri for many years.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ West facing gate of Shree Jagannath Temple complex is called the Tiger Gate (ब्याघ्र द्वार)/ West/Western Gate (पश्चिम द्वार) and also known as the Khanja Gate (खंज द्वार). It named after the symbolic animal representation at the gate. Dharma (धर्म) is one of the four ways by which one can reach Shree Jagannath. Tiger is the symbol of Dharma. It is an important part of sanatan (Hindu) way of lifestyle. In each and every moment one to has to adhere with Dharma.
