Gohar Mahal is situated at Upper lake,located at the central part of city Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh).Gohar Begum also known as Qudsia Begum was the daughter of Javed Khan Hijda. She was named Udam Bai before her marriage, but after Muhammad Shah found her and took her as third wife.

Gohar Mahal is a palace that was built in the early 19th century by the first woman ruler of Bhopal. The palace is presently in ruins and needs a lot of More than 200 years old it was built by the first woman ruler of Bhopal, Qudsia Begum (reigned 1819-1837), who was nicknamed ‘Gauhar’. The palace, which was residential as well as a working place for the Begum, is known for its Indo-Islamic architecture. It is unique among the contemporary palatial structures in other parts of the country in the sense that it has no separate designated parts for women and men (mardana and zanana) since the ruler herself was a woman.

Gauhar Mahal is a very secluded Mahal (Palace) facing Bada Talav in Bhopal near Iqbal Chowk. It is opposite Moti Masjid (Mosque). It is a historically important monument and you should definetly visit on your Bhopal Tour.

In 19th century, she was an unprejudiced woman ruler who directly rose to power without any struggle. She shouldered the responsibilities and duties of the princely state of Bhopal with a lot of perfection. She is an unbiased queen and an efficient ruler. Amongst her subjects and region, she as well respected and popular. She is considered as India's first woman's-libber by the historians. She was much modern and liberal in her outlook. With the Begums of Bhopal, Gohar Mahal became the center of political and administrative power.
