β β β β β Locally known as Baba Khamba, Heliodorus pillar was erected by a Greek ambassador, Heliodorus. Bidisha was the capital of the Shungas and Heliodorus came to the court of a Shunga ruler called Bhagbhadra. He was a devotee of lord Vishnu and dedicated the pillar to him. There is an inscription, known as Besnagar pillar inscription, at the base of the pillar.
Baba Khamba alias Heliodorus pillar is 15/20 min drive from Bidisha Railway station.

β β β β β The story of Heleodorus, a Greek who came to India for knowledge and impressed by the Bhagwat culture named himself as Bhagwat and commissioned this piller inscribed in Brahmi script during the region of King Brhambhatta 2300 years ago is truly fascinating. The piller in itself might not be grand compared to other monuments nearby but is fascinating nonetheless.
It was long lost to time and became a subject of devotion for local fishermen communities which addressed it as Khamb baba. It was restored in 1922 and is now well maintained.

β β β β β This is a Garud Dwaja (Garud Pillar) dedicated to Vasudeva. The dedication was made by Indo-Greek Ambassador Heliodoros s/o Dios from Taxila Indo-Greek King Antialkidas in the court of Indian King Kasiputra Bhagbhadra. The Pillar gives us glimpse of Shunga period political setup. The script is Brahmi and Language is Sanskritized Prakrit. The Inscription also has a Sloka from Mahabharata.

β β β β β Heliodorus Pillar, erected around 113 BC at Besnagar near Vidisha, (Modern state of Madhya Prades), is a fine example of Hellenistic influence in ancient Indian art, architecture and sculpture.
This pillar which resembles Ashokan Pillars, was erected by Heliodorus, who was a ambassador of Indo-Greek king to the court of Bhagabhadra. The pillar praises the traditional Vaishnava religion. Its noteworthy to mention here that this pillar is situated only 11 kilometres from Buddhist stupa of Sanchi.
These sorts of sculpture and architecture is a clear pointer towards a vibrant cultural efflorescence during ancient period in India.

β β β β β An interesting testimony to ancient history and the importance of Vidisha as it is thought to be constructed by an ambassador of an Indo-Greek King of Taxila to embody his faith in Vaishnavism. A record of early Vaishnavism. Besides the pillar, under a tree are several stones pieces with engraving. Please also notice nails in the trunk of same tree thought to symbolise a local ritual.
