Maharani Jind Kaur, the wife of the founder and ruler of the Punjab Empire, 'Sher-e-Punjab' Maharaja Ranjit Singh was cremated here. It's an irony that a woman of the status of Maharani could not find a place in her own land to rest peacefully. She was born in Punjab, exiled in Central India later to Nepal and Calcutta from where her son, the namesake Maharaja of the Punjab, Dulip Singh took her to England where she died in 1863 asking her son to fulfil her wish of resting peacefully near her husband in Lahore Fort. The cruel British officers denied all the requests made by Dulip SIngh and just agreed to let her ashes be submerged in any of the holy rivers of India. Later, after one year of her death, Dulip Singh came to Bombay from London in a ship with her ashes and submerged her ashes into the holy river of Godavari, aka the Ganges of the South. In 1923, Dulip's daughter Bumba Singh took her ashes from Panchavati Nasik to Lahore and buried her ashes near that of her husband Ranjit Singh's inside the fort of Lahore where they actually belong. Long story. Nasik Municipal corporation should not neglect such a vital piece of history, for the fact that Maharaja Ranjit Singh is as big a figure for the Sikhs and the Punjabis as the great Ch. Shivaji Maharaj for us.
