★ ★ ★ ★ ★ etcalfe House is the name given to two residential houses built in the 19th century in Delhi; one is near Old Delhi Civil Lines and the other is in Mehrauli, South Delhi. These were built by Sir Thomas Theophilus Metcalfe, 4th Baronet (1795–1853), the refined Civil Servant, when he was the Governor General’s last British Resident (Agent) at the Mughal Court of Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar II.

It has carved columns & semi-circular arches.
It was built to provide a lovely view of the towering Qutub Minar, Jamai Kamali mosque & the surrounding greenscape.
Thomas Metcalfe was a Resident at the Mughal court of Bahadur Shah II.
After he purchased Quli Khan’s tomb, he landscaped the gardens by adding structures like canopied folly, pyramidical
ziggurat, boat house etc to enhance the view.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The Metcalfe Canopy or the Metcalfe Folly is a British architecture built by Charles Metcalfe, within the campus of the historical city of Mehrauli, next to the Jamali Kamali mosque. It was a new architecture built to look like an old one, to match the picturesque ambience of the historical location. In its center at the top, there is a hexagonal structure from which one can get a great view of the erect Qutub Minar. This is a perfect place for group photographs.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Metcalfe Canopy or Metcalfe’s Folly is a structure inside the Mehrauli Archaeological Park, named for Sir Thomas Theophilus Metcalfe, an agent of the British East India Company in the court of the Mughal Emperors. The structure is a hexagonal shaped pavilion standing atop a grassy mound opposite the Jamali Kamali Tomb and Mosque. It’s what the Brits would call a folly, that is an ornamental structure, often in a park or garden.
The building is somewhat innocuous except for the elevated position is high up enough to provide good views of the surrounding area around the archaeological park.
