★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Of the ten saints who were instrumental in bringing knowledge to humanity; Maharishi Markandeya was one of them. He had established an ashram in this place. He was the grandson of Maharishi Bhrugu, who had witnessed the "Balamukunda" resting upon leaf of Kalpabata during Pralaya.
It is said that, Lord shiva escaped Rishi markandeya from Yama, god of death. As a homage, he established lord shiva here; who known as Markandeswar Mahadev. Legend says, the nearest pond known as markandeya pond created by Sudarshan Chakra. The tank is one among pancha tirtha.

Being one of the important temples of Puri, I think it could be maintained in a better way.
Please be noted that there is no dedicated parking for this place and approaching roads are very narrow.
