The Uparkot Fort is a complex containing the fort, the Uparkot Buddhist Caves, lots of Hindu temples, two ancient water tanks and a modern one. The namesake of the complex is of course the fort/palace structure. From the town, it’s a gentle climb up to the fort, so you don’t actually realize how high the fort is. It’s only when you climb up to the parapet of the fort that you’ll see it has a commanding view of the surrounding area. The fort is largely ruins. The palace structure at the centre of the fort complex is still in reasonably good condition, and retains the pillared halls of what must’ve been a very grand hall in its heydays. Uparkot Fort is one of the more interesting things to do in Junagadh and a little off the tourist trail in India. It’s definitely worth a look in the city and the entire complex is mostly free except for the Buddhist Caves. Overall, a good way to spend a few hours with many things to see.

One of the old forts of the Mauryan empire over-viewing the western part of their empire, located at the foothills of Girnar. They allow entry inside the fort, which one can take a tour along the lofty walls all around the fort.It provides the complete view & strategic importance of its location. Though most areas inside has been taken over by vegetation, but yet the views are stunning. It takes you back to the period.

History of uparkot fort: This ancient fort is believed to have been built in 319 BC by the Mauryan emperor Chandragupta, though it has been extended many times. In places, the ramparts reach 20m high. It's been besieged 16 times, and legend has it that the fort once withstood a 12-year siege.

History: Said to have been built in 319 BC, the fort was the architectural work of Chandragupta. But the fort changed many hands. Remnants of different rulers can be seen in some parts of the structure. For example, on the rampart above the gate is an inscription of Mandalika III, dated 1450. Another emblem is in the form of a 10 inch bore cannon of bell-metal - 17 feet long and 4 feet 8-inch round at the mouth. This gun was brought from Diu, where it was left by the Ottoman Turks when they were defeated in the Siege of Diu in the mid-16th century. Best time to visit: The best time to visit is between November and February.
