Samrat Yantra is named after Pandit Jaganath Samrat who helped Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh in studying astronomy. There are 2 Samrat Yantras, Vrihat(big) & Laghu(small) Samrat Yantra. Samrat Yantra is a sun dial with 2 parts, an inclined ramp(gnomon) & a curved scale with markings on either side. The triangular ramp is aligned with the axis of Jaipur, in the N-S direction, pointing towards the North Pole. The ramps shadow as it falls on the semi-circular curves, gives the local Jaipur time. As the sun rises from bottom(E) to top (W), the shadow moves from top to bottom. The 2 circular scales are divided into 6 hr each, for the morning & the afternoon segments. Vrihat Samrat Yantra It is the largest sundial, with a gnomon 22.6m high & quadrants radius 15.5m. It gives local time to 2 sec accuracy. Each hour is divided into ½ hr, ¼ hr, 5 min, 1 min. Each min has 10 subdivisions each of 6 sec, each has 3 divisions of 2 sec each. Therefore, the accuracy of this sundial is 2 sec. Laghu Samrat Yantra. In this sun dial, each minute is divided into 3 divisions, so the accuracy is ⅓ of a min, or 20 sec. To convert the time obtained from this instrument to our clock time, correction factor to be added is displayed.
