Amaravathi Amareswara Swamy Temple or Amararama Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is situated in the Amaravati town, Guntur, Andhra Pradesh. This famous temple is located on the southern bank of the Krishna River is considered to be very sacred and one of the Pancharama Kshetras (five temples) dedicated to Lord Shiva in Andhra Pradesh. It is believed that the sacred Shivalingam of Amareswara Swamy Temple was installed by Lord Indra himself. As per mythology, Tarakasura was a powerful demon king and when he was killed, the Shivalingam which was present on his neck was broken into five pieces and fell into five different places. It was on these five places the Pancharama Kshetras were built. Sri Amareswara Swamy Temple was later renovated and expanded by Vasireddy Venkatadri Naidu, who was the King of Chintapalli and Dharanikota, and also a great devotee of Lord Shiva. According to another mythology, when Vasireddy Venkatadri Naidu was trying to suppress a rebellion in his place, a solution to a massacre of the Chenchus was necessitated. As a result, he lost his mental peace and he decided to visit Amaravati. In 1796, he went to Amaravati and dedicated his entire life there. He spent all his possessions to construct Shiva temples. He appointed nine priests at Amareswara Swamy temple to perform rituals to Shivalingam.

Lord Amareswara swami's temple is famous for the un-usually tall linga in the sanctum sanctorum. Legend has it that the lingam kept growing in height until a nail was struck on the top to prevent it from growing further and then blood oozed from that spot. The kshetra mahatyam mentions Narada maha muni advising the rishis to bathe in river krishna and worship Shiva in the form of Amamreswara to attain liberation. However the most important story is about the fierce demon Tarakasura who had defeated the gods in battle. There was no end to his tyranny. Then, Subramanyeswara swamy fought him. In order to kill Tarakasura he had to strike the lingam in his throat with his spear. This shattered the lingam into 5 pieces which fell at 5 different places on earth and became the Panchaarama kshetrams. The largest of the 5 pieces fell in Amaravati and came to be worshipped by devotees as Amaralingeswara swamy. There's ample space for parking 4 wheelers. The temple may get over crowded with devotees during Shiva ratri and other important festivals. Beware of pick pocketers. Be careful with kids and toddlers when you go for a dip in the krishna river.

The temple is situated on the banks of the Krishna river. It's quite and peaceful out here. The temple complex has many small idols. There are different Shiv Lingas along with the Devi Idols. It's so quite here that you can hear chirping of the parrots inside the temple. Bit dissapointed with the maintenance though but overall experience visiting the temple was worth it. You also can visit the Buddha Statue nearby or even the museum where you visit Amaravati.
