Amaravathi Amareswara Swamy Temple or Amararama Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is situated in the Amaravati town, Guntur, Andhra Pradesh. This famous temple is located on the southern bank of the Krishna River is considered to be very sacred and one of the Pancharama Kshetras (five temples) dedicated to Lord Shiva in Andhra Pradesh. It is believed that the sacred Shivalingam of Amareswara Swamy Temple  was installed by Lord Indra himself. As per mythology, Tarakasura was a powerful demon king and when he was killed, the Shivalingam which was present on his neck was broken into five pieces and fell into five different places. It was on these five places the Pancharama Kshetras were built. Sri Amareswara Swamy Temple was later renovated and expanded by Vasireddy Venkatadri Naidu, who was the King of Chintapalli and Dharanikota, and also a great devotee of Lord Shiva. According to another mythology, when Vasireddy Venkatadri Naidu was trying to suppress a rebellion in his place, a solution to a massacre of the Chenchus was necessitated. As a result, he lost his mental peace and he decided to visit Amaravati. In 1796, he went to Amaravati and dedicated his entire life there. He spent all his possessions to construct Shiva temples. He appointed nine priests at Amareswara Swamy temple to perform rituals to Shivalingam.

ஆங்கிலத்தில் எழுதுவதற்கு மன்னிக்கவும். 20 Nov 2021. When we got the invitation for our friends wedding in Vijayawada, we made up our mind that without fail we will visit this temple, since it was the only one that was left out from our previous visits to the "Pancha Rama Kshethrams". We did find time in between the wedding function and started early towards Amaravathi. The road from Vijayawada to this temple was absolutely pathetic, horrible. It is worse than a gully road and yet traffic goes at full speed in both directions in these small roads. It was very tough driving on these small lane like roads. The better option would be to drive from guntur, even though the roads may be with potholes but atleast it is a state highway wide enough to drive. Finally reached the temple, and we were very very happy that we reached the temple that we wanted to visit for a very long time. (nearly 4 years i think, since we visited the other 4 pancha rama kshtherams). Paid parking is available, and it is to your right hand side as you face the temple. Not sure how many cars it can hold, but it is a decent safe place to park your car. The first thing that took us by surprise and awe was the wonderful beautiful tall majestic rajagopuram, It is a 7 tier rajagopuram, built in dravidian style. Must be constructed new i believe, since it was so nice, clean and neat. Glad to see that people were visiting the temple. We took the free darshan. Reached the sanctum sanctorum and was surprised to see the huge shiv lingam, must be atleast 10 feet tall. We were very happy since the abhisegam to the lord started, and as we witnessed the abhisegam, we recited our thevaram and thiruvasagam songs. Went around the prakaram, not much of information is in english, so it was kind of difficult for to gather information. Temple situated on the southern banks of the Krishna river. Temple faces east, Lord Amareswara swamy faces east. Ambal faces south. Rajagopuram present and faces south. Kodimaram present. Lord indira prayed Lord shiva here in this place. The five Pancha Rama kshterams are : Amararama (amaravathi) , Draksharama (draksharama), Somarama (bhimavaram), Ksheerarama (palakollu), Kumararama (samalkota). If my memory serves right, i think only this temple is on the banks of the river. Definitely a must visit place if you in around amaravathi.
