AGRA, India — At the entrance to the 42-acre Taj Mahal complex in which one of the most famous buildings in the world sits is a red sandstone building known as Darwaza-i Rauza, “Gate of the Mausoleum,” or as it’s commonly known, the Great Gate. Four octagonal towers sit at the corners of the building, each sporting a white marble dome. Similar to the writings found at the Taj Mahal, the main archway was inscribed with stylized calligraphy — comprising black marble inlaid into white — attributed to Abd ul-Haq of Shiraz, Iran, who migrated to India in 1609 and was awarded the title “Amanat Khan” by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. It bears the inscription, “O Soul, thou art at rest. Return to the Lord at peace with Him, and He at peace with you.” The main entrance is framed in rectangular with sura 89 of the Qur’an, namely al-Fajr (daybreak) inviting the believers into the Paradise. The Gate does not have an outer dome. The miniature eleven domes (cupolas) between the two high columns namely guldastas, framing the entrance from the base are the topping features above the entrance. The northern entrance from the funerary garden is ornamented with another sura of the Qur’an as the only difference. The calligrapher, Amanat Khan’s signature is at the bottom left end of the frame dated Hijri 1057 (AD 1647/48).A remarkable building in itself and a fine example of Islamic architecture, the Great Gate likely doesn’t get the respect it warrants due to its sister structure to the north, the Taj Mahal.

I was born and brought up just 200kms from Tajmahal but it took me 35Years to visit The Taj. Great Gate is the gate from which you enter to Tajmahal Campus and you see first glimpse of Taj. I have seen millions of pictures of Tajmahal and I was very prepared before going there. Somewhere I was not expecting alot from Taj and I was hoping it would be like a regular Monument in India. But the first glimpse of Tajmahal from the Great Gate itself was so mesmerizing and amazing. I was almost stunned to see the beauty of Taj. So, you would have already researched about taj already. But here I would like to mention few important points to remember during your visit to Taj. > there is plenty of Parking space outside Taj. > you can take a Golf Cart ride to Taj Gate for rs 10. Or you can walk to Taj Gate which takes around 20mins. > you should buy tickets online before visiting Taj. > there is a list of things which you can't take inside the Tajmahal including Tripod and food items. > there are lockers available to keep prohibited stuff > you should visit Taj in Morning or evening. (I would recommend to visit Taj multiple times during your visit to catch all views of Taj) > if you are a photographer or photography lover, give yourself enough time to capture and enjoy beauty of taj. You will find major crowd in front of Taj, but you will get best pictures from the side of Taj. Walk towards the Masjid to get best shot of Taj. I hope these information are helpful for your visit to Taj.

At the entrance to the 42-acre Taj Mahal complex is a red sandstone building known as Darwaza-i Rauza, “Gate of the Mausoleum,” or as it’s commonly known, the Great Gate. There are 11 small domes each on the northern and southern side of the top of the gate respectively, signifying that it took 22 years for completion of construction of the Taj Mahal. Similar to the writings found at the Taj Mahal, the main archway was inscribed with stylized calligraphy — comprising black marble inlaid into white. A remarkable building in itself and a fine example of architecture, the Great Gate likely doesn’t get the respect it warrants due to its sister structure to the North - the Taj Mahal. While standing in the arch of the dark gate, in contrast, one can see the Taj Mahal appear and shine in pure white. Amazing sight!

One of the finest architectures in the world. It's been so many centuries, but the architecture still stands what it was. Must visit place. Come with your family or friends. It's fun in here. You get to know a lot of things and enjoy the breathtaking views of the Taj Mahal. The name of the gate is Darwaza-i-Rauza.
