★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Shri Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj (Circa 1630-1680) was a legendary leader and ruler who was much ahead of his time. A visionary who changed the course of Indian history by challenging foreigners' domination by creating a vibrant martial society out of a subjugated impoverished population.
A brave and genuinely secular ruler, he respected women and cared for downtrodden and farmers. Shivaji Maharaj was a brave and fearless leader who must be credited for effective use of guerilla warfare to fight a superior enemy force with support from local population, knowledge of terrain, superior mobility and surprise. He converted his impoverished population into a vibrant and highly motivated military force to finally defeat the mighty mughal empire. Though modern historians credit Mao Zedeng and Che Guevara for development of Guerilla warfare, it was the military genius of Shivaji who really practiced it to great success, ahead of these leaders. He laid the foundation of Maratha domination of Indian subcontinent from Tanjaur in South to Attock in NW frontier province, when it was at the peak of its power.
