These were built by Kalachuri Maharaja Karnadeva (1042-1072 AD).
The Machhendranath and Pataleshwar temples are excellent examples of architecture.
In 788 A.D. Adi Shankaracharya was born and he consecrated on the banks of river Narmada in Amarkantak. He founded Pataleshwar Mahadev in Amarkantak, now known as Surajkund today.
Tickets are sold by online method by Archaeological survey of India website..
