★ ★ ★ ★ ★ महिषादल महज़ पश्चिम बंगाल के पूर्व मेदिनीपुर जिले के हल्दिया अनुमंडल में स्थित एक कस्बा नहीं है और न ही महज़ एक पूर्व भारतीय रियासत है। इसकी पहचान पूरी होती है 'सूर्जकुमार' से।
इसी प्रकार सूर्जकुमार के जीवन में जितना महत्व लखनऊ या इलाहाबाद का है, महिषादल का महत्व उनसे कहीं भी कमतर नहीं है।
हिंदी साहित्य के सर्वकालिक महान साहित्यकार और मां सरस्वती के अनन्य साधक सूर्जकुमार अर्थात सूर्यकांत त्रिपाठी 'निराला' का जन्म इसी महिषादल में 1896 की वसंत पंचमी को उन्नाव (उत्तर प्रदेश) से आए एक परिवार में हुआ था। यहीं स्थित 'महिषादल राज हाई स्कूल' से उन्होंने अपनी औपचारिक शिक्षा बांग्ला माध्यम से पूरी की और 1918 में यहीं पहली नौकरी पाई।
'महिषादल राज हाई स्कूल' के समीप स्थापित महाप्राण निराला की यह प्रतिमा इस महान विभूति को सम्मान देने की दिशा में किया गया प्रयास है।
प्रतिमा के साथ लगे शिलापट्ट में बांग्ला में लिखे शब्दों का हिंदी अनुवाद इस प्रकार है:
"साहित्यकार सूर्यकांत त्रिपाठी निराला
मूर्ति स्थापना अनुष्ठान
महिषादल राज हाई स्कूल प्रांगण
उद्घाटनकर्ता : श्री विष्णुकांत शास्त्री

 Mahishadal is not merely a town located in the Haldia subdivision of East Medinipur district in West Bengal, nor is it a former Indian state. Its identity is fulfilled by 'Surjkumar'.
Similarly, the importance of Mahishadal is not any less than the importance of Lucknow or Allahabad in Soorajkumar's life.
Soorajkumar i.e. Suryakant Tripathi 'Nirala', the all-time great litterateur of Hindi literature and exclusive seeker of mother Saraswati, was born in the same Mahishadal in a family from Unnao (Uttar Pradesh) on 1896 Vasant Panchami. He completed his formal education through Bengali medium from 'Mahishadal Raj High School' here and got his first job here in 1918.
This statue of Mahaprana Nirala, established near the 'Mahishadal Raj High School', is an effort towards honoring this great Vibhuti.
The Hindi translation of the words written in Bengali in the Shilapatta with the statue is as follows:
