I have been extremely lucky that I live close to National Park and have visited the caves since my childhood. This recent visit was with guided by Dr Suraj Pandit who has spent over 20 years researching on these caves and has even discovered some new caves. I hope this complex is one day declared as a World Heritage Site.

The Kanheri Caves are Buddhist cave temples and fine examples of the rock-cut architecture of India. Most of the caves are relatively simple and largely undecorated. The main exceptions are caves 1 to 4, which are all near the entrance. Cave 3 is the Chaitya and probably the most impressive of all the cave temples as it has a pillared hall with a stupa at the end of the hall. All the pillars have richly decorated capitals depicting scenes featuring elephants. For the more adventurous, you can visit the park by using local transport by getting a train to Borivali Railway Station, walk 15 minutes to the entrance of Sanjay Gandhi National Park, then travel the whole way up by a cycle . You can rent a cycle at the entrance of the park

Situated within the national park is a archeological complex of some 160 rock-cut caves popularly known as the ‘Kanheri Caves’. The caves are carved from basalt rock and date from the 1st century BCE to the 10th century CE. Kanheri is derived from Sanskrit word Krishnagiri, which literally means black mountain. Visitors can view the magnificent relics of Buddha and the Bodhisattvas and walk along the pillared corridors of the prayer halls chiseled out in the rocky outcrop. There is also an ancient water storage and management system for hermits who used to live in the caves, which is worth studying and emulating in modern times. BEST bus and Private Omni Available from Main Entrance of SGNP 10Rs per person to reach at this place.
