★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Sunderwala Mahal - a 16th century World Heritage monument
Sitting in a beautiful manicured green lawn with vintage iron chair around it, this monument has a beautiful ambience.
The site is very clean and well maintained. One can go inside the monument too and it is very clean. It has been recently conserved by Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC).
This mausoleum is a square structure comprising of an underground crypt surrounded by eight chambers – representing the Hasht Bihist, or the eight-spaces of Quranic Paradise. The corners are also chamfered to create an eight-sided irregular octagon. Together with Sunder Burj this stood within a walled garden, no traces of which now remain. Major conservation works undertaken on this symmetrical structure required reconstruction of collapsed portions and other major structural repairs. Subtle muqarnas and niches adorn the half-domed arcade on each of the four facades. To the east of the tomb a Mughal-era well was discovered during conservation works and similarly conserved.
