These are lost and found pages of Indian history with few missing pages and few question marks like who and why the heads of Buddha were cut. If you have interest and respect for history then the place is worth the value otherwise it's nothing more than the bunch of rocks put together. Must take a guide to know the place better.

Sanchi is a Buddhist complex, famous for its Great Stupa, on a hilltop at Sanchi Town in Raisen District of the State of Madhya Pradesh, India. It is located in 46 kilometres (29 mi) north-east of Bhopal, capital of Madhya Pradesh. The Great Stupa at Sanchi is one of the oldest stone structures in India, and an important monument of Indian Architecture.[1] It was originally commissioned by the Mauryan emperor Ashoka the Great in the 3rd century BCE. Its nucleus was a simple hemispherical brick structure built over the relics of the Buddha

The presence and depiction of this site on the Indian 200 currency note itself represents the importance of this Monument. It exhibits rich history and culture of Buddhist beliefs. The stone carvings and motifs on the four entrance gateways depict various stories from the birth of Gautam Buddha, his preaching and lifestyle of his disciples. It is highly recommended you hire a professional guide if you wish to understand these motifs properly. This Monument was originally made more than 2000 years ago and modified and redeveloped for years. Their are many small Stupa around with Viharas and Excavated stone motif displays. A Unesco World Heritage Site. ASI has done a fabulous job preserving this site. Just one small cafe at site serving tea and not many options for refreshments inside.

The Great Stupa at Sanchi is one of the oldest stone structures in India, and an important monument of Indian Architecture. The Great Stupa (also called stupa no. 1) was originally built in the 3rd century bce by the Mauryan emperor Ashoka and is believed to house ashes of the Buddha. The simple structure was damaged at some point during the 2nd century bce. At its simplest, a stupa is a dirt burial mound faced with stone. They are completely covered with relief sculptures depicting Jatakas (stories of the Buddha's earlier incarnations), scenes from the life of the historical Buddha, and Buddhist symbols. The site of Sanchi was discovered in the year 1818 by General Taylor and an archaeological museum was established in 1919 by Sir John Marshall. Being at a short distance from Bhopal, most visitors prefer to hire a cab to get to the Stupa complex, as this is the fastest and most convenient way of getting to Sanchi from the state’s capital, Bhopal. 1. It's a great historic place to visit with your friends or family! There are a lot of small stupas and a main stupa. There are clean restrooms, and I hope they keep them maintained. There's a canteen where you can have some snacks and tea. And also a store from where you can buy a souvenir to remember SANCHI by! Tour guides are available. ? Thank you.
