The 3 Stupas are located on top of a hill these Stupas are hemispherical structures containing relics of the Buddha or his followers. The Stupas of Sanchi were constructed 2300 years ago by Emperor Ashoka to spread Buddhism. The stupas, temples, monasteries and the Ashoka pillar are the main attractions here. Stupa is crowned by the chatra. chatra is an umbrella like structure symbolising high rank, which was intended to honour and shelter the relics. 4 intricately carved ornamental gateways and a balustrade encircling the entire Stupa were added later. Ashoka pillar is a sandstone pillar, inscribed with Brahmi characters that was erected here by Emperor Ashoka. While the lower portion of it is still grounded, the upper portions are kept under a canopy.
