Just to the north of Howrah Bridge the Jagannanth Ghat stands majestically on the eastern bank of the River Hoogly, This beautifully constructed ghat in classical European style was built by Shobharam Basak, the famous trader and merchant, who became a millionaire by supplying textiles to the East India Company. Jagannath Ghat, with a drum-shaped crown on its top, was constructed around 1760s. Initially it was known as Shobharam Basak’s Ghat, the name was changed to Jagannath Ghat possibly because of its close presence to the adjacent Jajannath Temple, which was also constructed by Shobharam himself. The edifice of Jagannath Ghat remained intact till the 1940s, but since then, it has been lost forever in the wide wilderness. It was either destroyed for unknown reasons or replaced. Small motorized boats ply regularly from here to Kashipur Ghat, Kolkata. But the Ghat is not so clean. The high tide rush of water can be seen from here and the famous Belur Math can be approached by road from here.

The Jagannath Ghat, located on the eastern bank of the river Hooghly (Ganges) is one of the most popular ghats in North Kolkata, especially notable for the immersion of deities during the festive season, such as - Durga Puja, Kali Puja or Jagaddhatri Puja. This place is very much favorite for the photography lovers as well.

Best place to get the Howrah Bridge pictures.. The 1 star goes down for the dirtiness.. No parking around but you can park anywhere on the narrow lane as there is no traffic or vehicles in general.. I will suggest to walk down from the Howrah Bridge circle towards the Jagannath Ghat road and go left till the Ghat.. Then on return just walk back to the Howrah bridge circle and take the available transport..

Good for HOWRAH BRIDGE sight seeing and for Rivar Ganga Sight seeing. NOT good maintened and Less Facilities are available like proper sitting and little bit eating. LATRING & BATHROOM is available atboutside of this ghaat. Big drawback is BOAT/STEAMER facility is not available here for HOWRAH STATION & also for other places.

The Ghat was founded sometime between 1758, when the rebuilding of the Fort William started, and 1773, the year Sobharam died. The legend of Bishar Mohanty, who collected the Daru Brahma from the ashes, hid them in his Mridanga and brought them back to Kujanga Gada is popular in the Jagannath lore
