Baboo Raj Chandra Ghat, is named after the husband of Rani Rashmoni  is now only known by first words Baboo-ghat or Babu-ghat. Babu means a gentleman. It was built in 1830 and a  marble tablet beneath the pediment implies that Lord William Bentinck also encouraged building  of this ghat to improve public amenities. It is second oldest ghat on the Strand Road side of Kolkata and is quintessential 19th century Bengal with  a tall colonial structure, which is the landing berth of the ghat. It has a fine Doric-Greek style but is now completely encroached by vendors and priests. The old colonial structure and stairs leading to the river are in various stages of decay and derelict. A section of ghat meant for bathing of ladies has turned into a garbage point now. Yet the ghat is bustling with crowds since morning till late evening with people who use it for bathing, puja, religious ceremonies, massage and leisure. Beside availing ferry service to cross over to Howrah. Massage scenes, that are extreme rarity these days in the midst of Day Spa's, Salons, Thai and Swedish Massage parlours and plush Health Clubs. Old charm of a bygone era which some may find hilarious.

Beautiful place made and maintained by Kolkata Municipality. You can enjoy your precious moments here sitting on benches and taking the sip from the hot cup of tea. The river Ganga is flowing here. Also you can take a bath and can have a ferry ride. Thanks

Babughat is located on the bank of Hooghly River on Strand Road, Kolkata. It was built by Zamindar Babu Raj Chandra Das during British Raj. It was built with a view to improve public amenities. The ghat remains crowded since morning till evening with people who use it for bathing, puja and religious ceremonies. However, keeping the ghat clean is a big challenge.
